Which ethics committee should I apply to?

There is a School Ethics Committee as well as a number of university committees.

School Ethics Committee

If you meet all of the following criteria, you have to apply to the School Committee.

  1. You are registered for one of the following degrees:
    • Fourth year BSc (Electrical/Information Engineering)
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical Engineering
    • MSc in Engineering by Coursework and Research Report
    • Master of Engineering (Professional)
  2. The risk of harm to participants is low to non-existent. See the risk table for more detail.
  3. You are not dealing with medical data and/or conducting your research in a clinical or therapeutic setting.

University Ethics Committees

You need to apply to one of the university committees if any of the following criteria are met:

  1. You are registered for an MSc by dissertation or a PhD, or you are an academic.
  2. The risk of harm to participants is medium to high as per the risk table.
  3. You are dealing with medical data and/or conducting your research in a clinical or therapeutic setting.

Students and academics from this school typically need to apply to either the Human Research Ethics Committee (Non-Medical) or the Human Research Ethics Committee (Medical). For each committee that is listed on the university website, you will find the relevant documentation as well as contact details for any queries. You will need to follow the application process required for the committee that you are applying to.
